Frequently asked Questions

Visiting a new church can come with a few questions. Here are answers to some you might have about Greenway, from what to wear to what “Presbyterian” even means. If we’ve missed yours, just ask. We’d love to hear from you!

What should I wear?

There’s no dress code. Some people wear their Sunday best; others come more casually. Wear what makes you comfortable. Our only request? Just wear some clothes.

Who can take Communion?

Everyone is welcome at the Communion table. You don’t have to be a member of Greenway or a Presbyterian to participate. This is Christ’s table, and YOU are invited.

Do I have to be Presbyterian to attend?

Not at all! Whether you’ve been Presbyterian your whole life, come from another tradition, or are exploring faith for the first time, you are welcome here.

What if I’m not sure what I believe?

You don’t have to have everything figured out before coming to church. Bring your questions, your doubts, and your curiosity. Faith has room for all three.

What even is a Presbyterian?

A good question, especially for a word that takes a little practice to spell! Presbyterians are Christians in the Reformed tradition, a branch of the Protestant Reformation that began in the 1500s and was shaped by leaders such as John Calvin. This tradition emphasizes God’s grace, thoughtful engagement with Scripture, and faith lived out in everyday life.

Greenway belongs to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), or PC(USA). Our denomination took its present form in 1983 when two major Presbyterian bodies, historically associated with the northern and southern United States, reunited. Our roots, however, reach back centuries. Learn more about Presbyterian history.

The name Presbyterian comes from a Greek word meaning “elder,” which points to our polity, simply meaning how the church is organized and governed. Congregations elect elders who share leadership with pastors through a council called the session. Churches also work together through regional councils called presbyteries and synods, and a national council called the General Assembly. We believe that discerning how to follow Christ is a shared responsibility, involving prayer, conversation, and listening to one another. And yes, that does mean we have a few meetings, but you don't have to attend them all, unless you want! Learn more about how our church is governed.

Can I visit without becoming a member?

Absolutely. You’re welcome to come once, visit occasionally, or make Greenway your church home. You can take time to get to know the congregation without feeling obligated to join.

How can I learn more?

Reach out through the contact information on our website, on our Facebook page, or introduce yourself when you visit. We’d be glad to meet you and help answer your questions.

Do I need to know what to say or do during worship?

No prior experience required. If Presbyterian worship is new to you, give yourself time to settle in. You’re welcome to participate as you feel comfortable. There won’t be a quiz afterward.
